Pig Poetry Competition

Pig Poetry Competition

Celebrate the Year of the Pig, and the free range pigs of Jubilee Farm, by taking part in our pig poetry competition!

Launching 12 October at our Pig Club Tasting Menu event, and closing 12 November, the theme of our competition is the famous phrase by innovative American farmer Joel Salatin, who suggests that pig farming should ‘honour the pigness of the pig’. And that’s exactly what we do at Jubilee Farm, where our very free range pigs enjoy mud wallows, rooting in spacious paddocks, eating tasty organic feed plus surplus veggies from the market garden, and generally making pigs of themselves.

We have three categories in our pig poetry competition: open, primary school and secondary school. Anyone can apply in the open category but in the primary and secondary school categories, poems must be entered via a primary or secondary school. Please email your poem in MS Word format to mail [@] jubilee.coop by 23:59 on Tuesday 12th November to enter.

We have a great range of prizes to be won (full list at bottom of page), including our amazing pork’n’apple burgers, original artwork by Penn Jones, our artist-in-residence, and meet-the-pigs tours for the first-place winner in each catgeory. Each of the three winners in each category will be invited to attend and recite their poem at our Pig Poetry Workshop, to be held at Jubilee Farm on Saturday 23 November 11 – 1. Tickets at £10 per person and further details for the workshop will be available shortly.

The judges for our competition are our very own poet-in-residence Bill McKnight, Michelle Shirlow of Food NI, and Jude Stephens, Lecturer in Sustainable Rural Development at Queen’s University Belfast. In fact, if you need some inspiration to get you started, here’s a recording of Jude reciting the poem she composed for the arrival of our very first pigs!
