Organisation description

Formally established in 2017, Jubilee Community Benefit Society is a Christian and cooperative creation care organisation working for the benefit of both a geographical community of all backgrounds and beliefs, the town of Larne and the surrounding area of East and South Antrim, and a community of interest, the churches of Ireland. We define creation care as environmental and agricultural stewardship that incorporates flourishing and fairness, welfare and wellbeing. In seeking to implement this holistic vision, our mission is to practice and promote care farming, community-supported agriculture (CSA), and conservation education and engagement. Visit for more information.

Project description

In purchasing and developing Jubilee Farm, the first community-owned farm in Northern Ireland, we aim to produce a range of high-quality, certified-organic food that is healthy, humane, fair and sustainable, while also providing a series of care farming, and conservation education and engagement services, that inspire, inform and benefit those who take part in them. The year long intern will work with staff, volunteers and other stakeholder across each of these areas, but with a primary focus on the market garden. As well as contributing to our CARE (Care farming for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and the Environment) project on a weekly basis, the year long intern will also be involved in planning, preparing and communicating our second community share offer to finance our barn, planned for early 2020. The intern will also complete at least one individual project over the course of the year.

The role will be four days/28 hours or five days/35 hours per week (4 days if interns need to maintain a part-time job to support themselves financially), with up to six week’s holiday included. The role will be approximately 40% horticulture, 20% care farming, 10% livestock, 10% education and engagement and 20% personal projects. Days of work may vary and the intern will be expected to provide weekend cover for livestock and horticultural duties at least once per month. No accommodation is available for the Year Long Internship 2019 position, but a monthly stipend of £500 will be provided.
